Geneva-headquartered WTO released on June 6, 2017 the newly revised 2017 Essential Drug List. It’s learnt that it is the biggest list over the last 40 years, with new advice to antibiotic use included.

On the list, WTO experts have classified antibiotics into three categories: applicable, discreetly applied and standby antibiotics. Applicable antibiotics refer to antibiotics that can be used to treat widespread, common infection at any time; discreetly applied antibiotics are for rare infection, especially the first or secondary treatment; standby antibiotics are deemed the last resort to treat infection.

Regarding “applicable antibiotics”, WTO suggests that such antibiotics can be used to treat widespread, common infection at any time; several kinds of antibiotics (including amoxycillin) widely used to treat pneumonia and other infections are listed.

“Safe and effective drug is an integral part of any sanitary system,” said Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, assistant director-general of WTO sanitary system & innovation dept., “Making sure everybody has access to the required drug is of crucial importance to achieve the goal of Health for All.” It’s learnt that before that, WTO’s Essential Drug List was released 40 years ago, namely in 1977.

The main ingredient of Amoxy produced by United Lab is the amoxycillin WTO has classified into “applicable antibiotics”. It’s a widespread, common antibiotic against infection. As United Lab’s knock-out product, Amoxy has been accepted and recognized by a wide range of medical staff and patients with its good reputation and effect since it was introduced to the home market in 1991.
